Welcome

Welcome to the Northern Kentucky Interfaith Commission's Website.  2009 is our 40th year of operations so we want to "do everything up right" in celebration!  [For details on our Anniversary Celebration on October 5th  2009 go to the "News and Events" page.]

In 1969 Interfaith began by bringing Protestants and Roman Catholics in Boone, Campbell, & Kenton counties together for worship, prayer, and community service.  Over the years we have connected with the local Jewish community and more recently  we have reached out to members of several other world religions as well (see "9-11 Pray for Peace" article).  We believe that many of our problems in our own neighborhoods and around the globe could lessened if we had a better understanding of each others' religions, that we have more in common than most people assume.

All of our events and monthly Delegates Meetings are open to the public.  We are happy to have input from people of as many different denominations of Christianity and other faiths as possible, believing that our diversity is our strength--come join us!

Below is a photograph of the closing prayer circle at last year's "9-11 Pray for Peace Service" at the World Peace Bell in Newport (425 York Street).  This observance was started in 2007 by our Executive Director, Rev. Jim Bishop.  The response was most encouraging, with Buddhists, Christians (Protestants and Roman Catholics), Jews, and Muslims participating in the service.

Between 8:30am and 10:30am people of ALL faiths are invited to stop by the powerful symbol of the World Peace Bell  for silent or spoken prayer.  Religious leaders and lay persons take turns speaking on the theme of peace, and leading those present in prayer.  In between speakers "heavenly" dulcimer and psalter music is provided by Rev. Don Drewry (a United Methodist minister & Newport Police Chaplain).  Several vocalists contribute as well.
